Attending high school in north Queensland, Baynes’ interest in basketball was helped by having a professional team nearby.
As a 17-year-old he was training with the NBL’s Cairns Taipans and would later join the Taipans academy and the Australian Institute of Sport, as well as playing in the semi-professional league for the Cairns Marlins with whom he won a national championship in 2004.
